Advocating For Health Equality

Health equity and inclusion remain unbalanced in communities across the nation. We are continuously working with healthcare professionals and lawmakers to see that all families have adequate care and resources for family needs.

Every year, more than 370,000 babies are born prematurely in the U.S., and many full-term infants face serious medical complications that require neonatal intensive care. For their families, the NICU journey can be one of uncertainty, stress and isolation.

That’s why we’re urging you to take action today in support of the NICU Baby’s Bill of Rights (H. Res. 236) – a bipartisan resolution introduced by Representatives Erin Houchin (R-IN) and Morgan McGarvey (D-KY).

Now is the time to act. Your voice can help ensure that every baby and family receives the support, dignity and care they deserve. Click here to email Congress to voice your support.

On June 30, 2021, Governor Edwards signed HB 146 into law as Act 467, which establishes an income tax credit following the delivery of a stillborn child.

Saul's Light was proud to advocate for this law in support of Louisiana’s bereaved families.

We would like to thank Rep. Stephanie Hilferty and the Louisiana legislature for the courage to bring this bill forth and for the courage & compassion of the family advocates.

In 2022, The Louisiana Legislature enacted a law requiring Medicaid and Commercial insurance to cover pasteurized donor human milk when prescribed as medically necessary.

This applies to infants who are unable to receive maternal milk due to medical or physical reasons, either on the part of the infant or the mother.

Saul's Light was proud to advocate for this law in support of Louisiana’s NICU families.

In 2022, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards proclaimed September Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Awareness Month in the state of Louisiana.

The Proclamation states 15% of babies born in the US are admitted to the NICU. 60% of NICU parents are at risk for PTSD. Premature birth is the largest contributor of infant death in Louisiana.

Raising awareness helps the community understand what the NICU is and how a stay in the NICU can impact whole families.
